In celebration of World Environment Day and Sustainable Gastronomy Day, Burlington English is delighted to launch BE Inspired 2026: The Story on My Plate, a creative writing contest that invites students to uncover the fascinating histories behind their favourite dishes.
Food is more than nourishment—it is a keeper of stories. Recipes passed down through generations preserve traditions, cultures, and memories, while ingredients reflect the landscapes and communities from which they come. Every dish carries traces of the people, places, and environments that shaped it.
Many beloved dishes have remarkable journeys. Some emerged from local farming traditions, while others evolved through trade, migration, and cultural exchange. These stories reveal how closely food is connected to both cultural heritage and the natural world.
Through The Story on My Plate, students will research the origins of a favourite dish and transform their findings into an original story. Whether exploring a family recipe, a regional speciality, or a favourite meal, they will discover how food connects people, cultures, history, and the environment.
This contest is designed to nurture observation, empathy, storytelling, and a genuine curiosity about the people around us.
Parameters for Judgement:
Grades 3 to 5:
• Storytelling and narrative structure
• Research and understanding of the dish’s history
• Creativity in connecting food, culture, and people
• Effective use of English
Grades 6 to 8:
• Depth and accuracy of research
• Originality and creativity of storytelling
• Understanding of cultural and environmental connections
• Organisation, coherence, and effective use of English
How Students Can Participate
Step 1: Choose your favourite dish. It could be a family recipe, a regional speciality, a festive favourite, or a meal you simply love.
Step 2: Research its history. Where did it originate? How did it evolve? What people, places, traditions, or ingredients shaped its journey?
Step 3: Discover how the dish connects to culture, heritage, agriculture, sustainability, or the environment.
Step 4: Write an original story inspired by your research in.
Step 5: Attach an image of the dish to the story and proofread the entire writeup.
Step 6: Submit your entry using the grade-specific link provided.
Step 7: Follow the Burlington English page on Facebook or Instagram and comment #Participated on the announcement post.

• Word limit for grades 3 to 5: 400–500 words
• Word limit for grades 6 to 8: 800–1000 words

This Mother's Day, our hearts were filled with love and creativity! All the amazing students from Grades 1-8 who participated in our #StanzaForSupermom contest submitted lyrical poems describing their mothers.
We were impressed by the beautiful poems celebrating the incredible bond between mothers and children.
What an incredible week of fierce debate and intellectual exchange! A huge round of applause to all the participants who battled it out in the arena of Indian Debating League 3.0, a collaboration between Burlington English and IIT Delhi. The passion, critical thinking ability, and eloquence of the participants were inspiring.
