This World English Language Day, Burlington English is delighted to launch BE Magic Hat 2026: My Neighbourhood Cast, a creative contest that invites students to discover, observe, and celebrate the unforgettable people in their neighbourhood.
World English Language Day, celebrated on 23rd April — the birthday of William Shakespeare — honours the richness of language and its power to bring people to life. Shakespeare understood this better than anyone. His plays are populated with characters from every walk of life — kings and fools, merchants and servants, lovers, and loners. He showed us that every person, no matter how ordinary they may seem, carries a story worth telling.
In My Neighbourhood Cast, we invite students to follow in this tradition. Every neighbourhood has its own cast of characters — the chai wala who knows everyone by name, the aunty who watches over the street like a guardian, the shopkeeper who has a story for every customer, and many more. These are the people who give a place its personality, its warmth, and its soul. Students will observe them and create a short character-sketch video that introduces the world to the people who make their neighbourhood come alive.
This contest is designed to nurture observation, empathy, storytelling, and a genuine curiosity about the people around us.
Parameters for Judgement:
Grades 1 to 2:
• Clarity of speech and pronunciation
• Enthusiasm in introducing the person they have chosen
• Effort and creativity
Grades 3 to 5:
• Storytelling and descriptive language
• Ability to capture what makes the person unique
• Confidence and expression
Grades 6 to 8:
• Depth of observation and originality
• Empathy and sensitivity in portraying real people
• Quality of video presentation and narrative structure
• Effective use of English to convey character and emotion
How Students Can Participate:
Step 1: Look around your neighbourhood. Who are the people that make it unique? A vendor, a guard, a neighbour, or a teacher?
Step 2: Pick one person and spend time observing what makes them special — their habits, their words, and their presence.
Step 3: Create a short character-sketch video — represent them, share their story, and show us why they matter to your world.
Step 4: Submit your entry via the grade-specific link provided.
Step 5: Follow the Burlington English page on Facebook or Instagram, and comment #Participated on the announcement post.
Note: Videos of the real-life character representing themselves on camera will not be considered.
